Structured Cabling Design
Wire and cable design work is required when a building is
constructed, a telephone system in a previously occupied
building is replaced, or a Local Area Network is installed or
expanded. Often the price of the cable, conduits, and
communications rooms, can equal the cost of the systems they
support. Experienced design assistance is essential to ensure
that large investments are correctly designed and installed.
Placement of fiber-optic backbones also requires careful design.
Wire and cable consultants assist with building design, wire
selection, conduit/riser design, as well as the planning of
individual cable runs and design of multi-building fiber optic
or coaxial systems.
WTCIs clients benefit from integrated voice/data wiring systems
that satisfy initial requirements while planning for future
needs without additional major investments. Also, the value of
wiring is maximized and plans for fiber-based networks can be
integrated into the system while ensuring compatibility with
wire/cable and data communications equipment.
WTCI has adopted the Construction Specifications Institutes
(CSI) MasterFormat for our specifications. The use of the
MasterFormat provides consistency in specification structure and
order to permit bidders to focus on the design instead of the
RFP Layout. Our most recent changes adopt the proposed Division
74 section used exclusively for communications systems.
What is an RCDD/OSP?
-
A
Registered Communications Distribution Designer Outside
Plant Specialist (RCDD/OSP) has attained the status of
exceptional excellence in the field. The RCDD/OSP
designation is recognized industrywide as indicating
superior design expertise.
-
The OSP designation is available only to current BICSI
members who possess the RCDD designation, and have a minimum
of two years OSP experience. Industry-wide, RCDDs are
recognized as having telecommunications design expertise.
With that foundation, those achieving the OSP designation
also possess outstanding OSP knowledge that will give them
significant competitive recognition.
-
RCDD/OSP Specialty candidates are rigorously tested on their
ability to understand and apply a vast collection of OSP
technology and design information.
-
Those awarded the OSP designation will demonstrate knowledge
and expertise in OSP right-of-way and route design; OSP
space design (maintenance holes, ducts, vaults);
underground, direct-buried, and aerial plant design; OSP
cabling hardware; and OSP grounding, bonding, and electrical
protection systems.
What is BICSI?
BICSI is a comprehensive, non-profit professional association
whose programs and interests cover the design and installation
of voice, data, and video cabling systems.
The BICSI mission statement...
"Leading the telecommunications industry in the enhancement of
quality services and methods around the globe by providing
excellence in education. Promoting skills sharing and assessing
knowledge with professional registration programs."
